The smartphone market these days is something of a battleground and deciding which handset is for you can be very difficult. High spec handsets in particular all seem to offer everything that you might need so how do you decide between them?

Nokia has bounced back into the smartphone market with the Lumia range and the Apple iPhone 5 is one of the most popular handsets around. At first glance they are similar in what they offer the user and they have received similar ratings from reviewers.

1. Operating System

One of the main differences between the two phones is the operating system. The Nokia phone uses Windows Phone while Apple using the iOS system.

2. Processor

The processor for the Nokia is multi-core as is that for the iPhone. A top of the range processor is a must for both of these handsets if they want to compete and users will not be left disappointed.

3. Battery

Battery life differs in that the Nokia handset has a standby time of up to 400 hours with a talk time of up to 10 hours. The iPhone has a standby time of 225 hours and a talk time of 8 hours, which is not as impressive as the Nokia and might be something of a let-down for those who rely a lot on their smartphones.

4. Memory

Onboard storage is a major factor for most smartphone users. The Nokia Lumia 920 has been given 32GB with no option to expand. There are several options for the iPhone as the user can choose 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. There is also no microSD slot on this handset. For most people the 32GB storage is plenty and in this respect the Nokia holds its own.

5. Camera

The camera on the Nokia has 8 megapixels and a built in flash as well as a front facing camera suitable for video calls. There is also a video recording option. The camera features on the iPhone are very similar and users will find that both handsets allow them to take a good quality photo, particularly when you take into consideration the range of features and apps which allow for editing of the images.

6. Internet Use

Connection options on the Nokia include Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi and similar options on the iPhone mean that these handsets are fairly evenly matched. This means that keeping up with friends on social networking sites is easy on both handsets and there are all manner of tasks which can be carried out online.

7. Weight

One of the main differences in the two handsets is the weight. The Nokia has a weight of 185g while the Apple iPhone 5 is much lighter at 112g. The weight of the Nokia could put some users off but this is a handset which has been built very solidly and will withstand a few knocks throughout the course of the day.

Making a Judgement

The two phones are fairly evenly matched and even the most experienced smartphone user will be hard-pressed to find negative points about either of them so it just comes down to preference on the brand.
